"Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast." - Matthew 9:14-15
7 Basic Steps for Fasting &
Prayer*
1. Set your objective | Why are you fasting? Be as specific and
strategic as possible before you begin.
2. Make your commitment | Be as realistic and intentional as possible
before you begin.
3. Prepare yourself spiritually | Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit
(Ephesians 5:18; 1 John 5:14,15)
4. Prepare yourself physically | If abstaining from food, eat smaller meals
leading up to it, stay hydrated, limit exercise.
5. Put yourself on a schedule | Be intentional about how you can
"delight in God" throughout the day in place of whatever it is you
are abstaining from.
6. End your fast gradually | Ease back into it rather than making up for
lost time!
7. Expect Results | John 14:21 reminds us that if we follow
God's commands, we should draw closer to Him.
